KELLER, TX DENTIST SHARES TREATMENT TIPS

By Esthetique Dental

We all know that stress leads to damage in the body, especially when it continues over long periods. Stress symptoms won’t always be life-threatening but they can be bothersome and uncomfortable. Stress can lead to unusual symptoms that you might not be aware of like dry mouth. Thankfully, there are ways to handle this.

Treatment for Dry Mouth

The first step to treating dry mouth is to relieve stress. If you can determine what is causing the stress, it might be easier to cope with. Have your friends and family become a support to you as you walk through this rough time in your life. It’s also important that you learn to accept what you can’t change. Use relaxation and meditation to deal with the powerlessness you are feeling.

You also need to pay close attention to the amount of fluids you are drinking. Staying hydrated is key to avoiding a dry mouth. It might be tempting for you to drink alcoholic or caffeinated beverages, but this could backfire and lead to additional dry mouth symptoms. When you aren’t able to drink, try chewing sugarless gum or candies instead to help you produce additional saliva.

Pay attention to your breathing patterns. When stress hits, people often breathe through the mouth. This dries the mouth out more and is a common reason there is a lack of saliva. Take deep breaths through your nose to alleviate symptoms. It also helps to alleviate stress. Simply inhale slowly through your nose and then exhale it all back out.

Saliva Substitutes

There are times when nothing you do will help your dry mouth. This is especially true if you are taking a medication that is affecting your saliva production. If all else fails, you might need to see your doctor to get a prescription for a saliva substitute.

The next time you are suffering from a dry mouth, be sure to ask yourself if stress could be the cause and take steps to alleviate it. If problems persist, don’t be afraid to reach out to your Keller, TX dentist and ask for further advice.
