Keller TX Dentist Explains why Gums May Bleed

As a Keller TX dentist office, we have had many patients call and come in regarding bleeding gums. If your gums are bleeding, that may be a sign that you are suffering from gum disease. However, bleeding gums can be cause by a number of things.

Some of the most common reasons for bleeding gums are:

Poor oral hygiene:

Your Keller TX dentist remind you that you should be brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. Failure to do so will result in a buildup of plaque and bacteria. It can also leave food particles rapped between the teeth.

When plaque builds up, and when food gets trapped between the teeth and isn’t removed, this results in inflammation of the gums. Once the gums have become inflamed, they will be more likely to bleed even from the gentlest touch.

Trauma to the gums:

Your Keller TX dentist recommends using a soft-bristled toothbrush. When you brush, you should also be sure to do so gently. Believe it or not, brushing too aggressively and too often (more than twice a day) can cause damage to your gums. It can even result in bleeding gums!

Crooked teeth

Crooked teeth often have smaller spaces between them. This makes it easier for food particles to get trapped, and more difficult to remove these food particles. As a result, the gums often get inflamed and sensitive and when that happens they will bleed more easily.

Vitamin K deficiency:

Your Keller TX dentist recommends consuming an adequate of vitamin K on a daily basis. Vitamin K aids the body’s process of clotting blood. When a person does not have enough vitamin K in their system they are more likely to bleed from any site of the body—including the gums!

Regardless of why your gums are bleeding, be sure to contact your Keller TX dentist to ensure that it is nothing to worry about. For questions or concerns, or to schedule an appointment call (817) 741-1240.
